More power to you Daniel...it takes strong, sensible people, such as you to bring mind change to the greater community on your special subject.

I am the mother of a beautiful gay man, who is now aged almost 35. He has worked tirelesly for many years, (especially the last 2 years), in and for the gay community. His goals are gradually being "ticked off" and we support him all the way.

Keep up your wonderful work.
A huge warm hug to you....Jan Butler.

Patena - I live and work in Brisbane and as an activist for LGBT and workers rights - I am really touched by your desire to create a safe-space environment for kids (and potentially your colleagues) in your workplace. We have a group called Queer Rights @ Work, which is a trade union based collective of activists involved in community activism, advocacy and support - and most importantly we have some really simple little stickers that might work well for your classroom. They are a rainbow coloured triangle with the message "homophobia @ work we say No!"...perhaps we can get in touch if you'd like some. The other group I can recommend you take a look at is the Ally Program at UQ here in Brisbane - might have some good ideas for you. As an out lesbian - I say THANK YOU for supporting and encouraging our LGBT youth to come out in a supported and positve environment - your son is a lucky man!!

Thanks Renon. Point taken. I am conscious of not "jumping on the (gay) band wagon" and making life uncomfortable for kids. Glad to hear about your progressive school in Victoria. Since my last comment the school councillor, myself and a number of other teachers have initiated an information and potential support session for yr 12's and staff about the LGBT community. It is going ahead asap.- something quite new for this country town... My son is still loving Sydney, has started uni., a new job and is "loving life" as he puts it (even tho he is getting over a recent broken heart - what's new for a 22year old !) Sorry it has taken me so long to reply, I only just rediscovered the blogg site. Hugs to you, Patena Moesker

Patena, i am a gay man of fifteen and i say Bravo to your desire to help :) the school i went to in Victoria (i live in Darwin now) had a support group for LGBT community, and seeing their sticker allways filled me with, i dont know, a sense of community and hope, which was REALLY big for me then. the only problem was that i never looked at for too long lest someone see me looking and discover my "dark secret". if you want to do this, which i think is a fantastic idea, do so in a way that if a kid comes to you, it doens t brand him as gay. i have no idea how to that, but food for thought hey :)

Dear Daniel,
I heard you recently on Radio National. So impressed. I am a secondary art teacher and the mother of a young gay man, Jeremy (age 22) who , after returning from an overseas jaunt, is going to train as a teacher (Primary and Languages). I/we love him to bits, his immediate and extended family. He is handsome - yes I know I'm biased - clever and sooo funny. He has many gorgeous friends and is popular. He lives in Sydney which really suits him, and will go to Uni at UTS. Jeremy was school captain at the school where I work, but hadn't come out at the time. He is quite OK about his sexuality and seems to have a resilient personality.
My concern is that I live in rural QLD, an hour from Brisbane, and there are so many homo-phobes (and racists) at my school. I would like to be involved in changing this somehow if possible, gradually/sensitively. How can I begin to do this? Can you or someone from 'Thats So Gay' (I love that name by the way) advise me? Some of my colleagues are the most prejudiced!! In Jeremy's year there were 6 LGBT young people and there have been a number of others since. I would appreciate a sticker or some visuals to indicate that my class room is "gay friendly" and maybe a refuge for those who need it, but is that wise...?. I don't want to appear like I'm "on a mission" and drawing attention to myself, I just feel I need to do something, even small. What's the best thing to do??
Love your work, Regards, Patena. :)

Daniel. I heard your interview on RN's Bush Telegraph. Loved the comment about the 2 lesbians in the regional Post Office. Could have easily been the two lesbians who own the PO in Maldon....where we have our weekender.
